28th November 2006

Minutes

Present: Manuela (Chair), Cinzia, Minute Taker Mary Anne Apologies: Neil, Ian, Tom

The meeting began with a discussion that raised two general points for Critical Practice, and will be conveyed to the relevant working groups: 1) The politics and ethics of funding – for instance, Manuela has come across a foundation that is supported by ‘diamond money’ and could be approached to fund the project; how do we feel about such enterprises? Research is to be done into the exact case of this funding body. How do we define ‘dirty money’? Should we not be ‘reflexive’ on the conditions of our funding and evolve a policy for how we fund ourselves, that goes beyond (just) questions of sponsorship?

2) We also identified much awkwardness with the funding of people for jobs / work. (See funding page for some questions)

- No-one had an issue with the fact that CP has established a ‘flat rate’ of £150 a day. However, because this is quite ‘high’ relative to CP’s overall budget, it soon becomes clear that CP can’t afford to pay for very many days, therefore it can’t afford to pay for anything other than very quick jobs. It’s therefore difficult to put in realistic labour costs for projects such as future archive: or rather, one could put in the knowledge that a large portion of the budget would have to be turned down - The meeting also addressed the awkwardness in the fact that 2 CP personnel are paid, (anyway), the rest not. We wondered what constitutes labour-to-be-remunerated: why some and not others and we wondered if we shouldn’t seek to extend our salaried staff base – if this would help (it might just enhance the differences). We think CP should address this differential.

Item 1: Website Manuela reported that • the website www.futurearchive.org should be ready in the next week • that Ian verified that it has different requirements from the CP site (hence needs to be separate • while conspicuously linked); that it should be on-line so that people can view it before the proposed CP meeting on Thursday 7th December.

Item 2: Long term funding – Report on actions taken as a result of last meeting’s ACTION points • Manuela has resourced details of ACE schemes and has established that a proposal can be submitted on a rolling basis – i.e. anytime. The future archive is eligible. ACTION: Manuela to work with MA on an application for deadline 15th December. • Manuela has made contact with the Austrian Cultural Forum; the ACF curator helped curate the Graz show; Manuela will meet her soon, possible over Christmas • Manuela has identified that the deadline for another scheme that she can apply to – the Calouste Gulbenkin – is December 31st 2006. ACTION: Manuela to work on an application to this fund, with help from MA. (To work to a self-imposed deadline of 15th December.) ACTION: Manuela also to approach the Boell foundation – will e-mail them

ACTION: Manuela also to approach the evens foundation – deadline February.

Item 3: Interim Funding • Manuela is now in a position to put a request to CP for ‘interim’ funding i.e. to cover the period since futurearchive became a CP project and up until it might be awarded funding from an external agency. (See future archive funding page) The meeting decided that future archive needs to put this request to CP asap: and proposed a meeting for Thursday 7th December, 6pm. Cinzia suggested that we combine this meeting with Trevor’s workshop on the ’15 second CP pitch link? as this will give people an incentive to turn up and also make more effective use of everyone’s time.

ACTION: Manuela to post details of proposed next CP meeting on CP front page and to mail people to ask if they can make this date / time. ACTON: MA will be asked to book AG07 if 7th December is OK for people.

Item 4: Update on Node projects We didn’t have time to address this as we got too focused on the funding issues. Will be done at next future archive meeting on Dec 12th or 13th (also to have a thorough discussion around the long term plan) Item 5: Any Other Business (AOB) To discuss: None – but see points for the Finance working group
