Songwriting Workshop

This workshop is about possibilities. It's an opportunity to explore some of what a composition inspired by Critical Practice might be. CP Song (Proposal) gives the basic outline of the project. Workshop handout 1 guides participants (and facilitators) through an introductory day. Workshop handout 2 builds on the first session and forces a song through dialogue.
It aims to cover:
  • research and generating source material
  • exploring form and structure
  • developing content
  • exploring accompaniment
  • the role of performance in songwriting
  • forcing words to music
  • collaborative songwriting
  • Listen to the first session and the second session.

Take a look at material from the two Critical Practice Songwriting Workshops: Friday 23rd February 2007 and Saturday 28th April.

    Preparation

The Morning Pages – A valuable discipline
Get up half an hour earlier than normal and prepare a morning beverage. With Critical Practice in mind, sit down and write half an hours worth of notes on A4, quick as you like, off the top of your head but not necessarily ‘automatic writing’. You may find it timely to pause and take your beverage after the first page. Ideally the exercise should be carried out every morning for a week. We ask that you focus on Critical Practice Aims and Objectives (perhaps reviewed the previous day) for at least one morning.
