#TransActing: A Market of Values

A bustling pop-up market will feature artists, designers, civil-society groups, academics, ecologists, activists and others who creatively explore existing structures of evaluation to produce alternative and more desirable ones. Organised by Critical Practice, #TransActing will take place on the historic Rootstein Hopkins Parade Ground between Tate Britain and Chelsea College of Arts. It will showcase diverse forms of value production such as skillshares, maker libraries and hacklabs, an auction, a blood donation bank, free mending and repair hubs, communing groups, expert and enthusiast knowledge and other resources. These will animate economies beyond the financial one that dominates contemporary life.

Support systems based on care, trust, loyalty and community rely on currencies that coexist with money but cannot be reduced to exchange based on pounds and pence. It's this wealth beyond capital that will be traded at #TransActing.

This market of values will be hosted in a bespoke structure built by Critical Practice with the help of the art and architecture practice Public Works and other makers. The stalls and other venues will be interspersed with spaces of assembly and exchange: a speakers' corner, a social cinema, while multiple currencies will circulate, many of them operating beyond the crude quantification of money.

Markets evaluate and communicate the worth of things, services, etc. Whilst the values distributed by competitive markets dominate contemporary life, including art and its education, other kinds of values can and do coexist, with some even flourishing in alternative communities of evaluation. #TransActing will nurture and celebrate these alternative value relations in a spectacular one-day event.
